Dear Friends,
Humility comes from the Greek word humus, the earth or the soil. To be humble is to be grounded. To be humble does not mean to despise oneself, but to be realistic and honest about oneself. Humility is the starting place for wisdom. Without humility, we cannot even admit what we do not know or what we cannot do. Without humility, we are bound to make a fool of ourselves. Humility sometimes gets a bad rap because we associate it, wrongly, as a virtue only for those with nothing much to
offer. In fact, with true humility comes enormous freedom. When we acknowledge our limitations, we know what we can and cannot do and we are free to do what we can do well and we are able to admit the things we cannot do.
Humility begins in our relationship with God. God is God and we are not. That is the first humility: allowing God to take charge of our lives (God does anyway, you know!) so that we can do what we can and still trust in God’s plan.
Peace and Good Will,
Fr. Bob
